   Audio horror.
"Pseudopod is a genre ‘zine. We’re looking for horror. We apply a fairly broad definition to “horror,” running the spectrum from supernatural horror (Dracula) to realistic horror (Cujo). We’re not going to try to pin down the genre’s boundaries and hack away at it until there’s nothing left. (We’ll leave that sort of hacking for your stories.) What matters is that the stories should be dark and they should be entertaining. If your story isn’t dark, but qualifies as science fiction or fantasy, please consider our sister site, Escape Pod. If it isn’t entertaining… Keep writing.

"We’re primarily interested in two lengths of fiction, which we’ve somewhat arbitrarily dubbed “short fiction” and “flash fiction.”

"Short Fiction: This is our meat and potatoes, the heart of our biweekly podcast. We want short stories between about 2,000 and 6,000 words. Shorter stories would get overwhelmed by our intro and outro segments, and longer stories are difficult to fit into our upper time limit (defined rigorously as “The length of an average morning commute.” Of course that keeps getting longer and longer…)

"No, we won’t be pasting your e-mails into Word to count exact words, so don’t lose sleep over which prepositions to cut. We’ll know if the story’s the right length by looking at it, and “the right length” is a bell curve. The sweet spot’s somewhere between 3,500 and 5,000 words, if you insist on a target. If you do have a story that’s longer than 6,000 words, use your own discretion; we may run longer stories than that, but be aware that it’s a much harder sell. The longer the story is, the more brilliant it needs to be to sustain audience interest. We pay $20 for short fiction at this length.

"Flash Fiction: We often podcast short five-to-ten minute “bonus” pieces between our weekly main episodes. For this we’re looking at fiction under 1,500 words, with a sweet spot between 500 and 1000 words. Yes, that’s really really short. That’s the point. Our flash pieces are frequently quirkier, more experimental than our weekly features. We pay $10 for flash fiction. What happens if you have a story between 1,500 and 2,000 words? We’ll make a judgment call, based on whether we think the story would work better as a featured story or a bonus. Most of the time we’ll buy it as flash fiction, but exceptions may be made. In general, your odds are considerably better if your story’s either shorter or longer than this.

"We are both an original and a reprint market, meaning we’ll consider both published and unpublished work. We define 'publication' as any venue that paid you money for your work, online or on paper. We’ll consider your story fairly in either case, but if your story’s good enough for us to buy it, it may be good enough to sell to another market first. Why not try that, and get two audiences and two checks?

"Content: We are an audio magazine. Our audience can’t skim past the boring parts, and stories with beautiful language at the expense of plot don’t translate well. We’re looking for fiction with strong pacing, well-defined characters, engaging dialogue, and clear action. It can be beautiful too, if you’ve got all those other bases covered, but above all we’re looking for entertaining.

"Humor is encouraged — black humor is a favorite. We like us a good monster story, but please make it original. Reworking of tired themes won’t do it for us. Above all, we want stories that make us think, that stick with us, that make us catch ourselves checking the locks a second time before bed.

"We are unlikely to purchase stories that focus heavily on incest. We are even more unlikely to purchase stories that focus heavily on rape or child molestation. We never say never — you may surprise us. But these are factors that stack the deck against you, as it’s harder in the opinion of our editors to make a story about these subjects that’s entertaining.

"We will not balk at sexual content or strong language, but if your story is primarily erotic or scatological in nature, it may not be for us. Consider Open Source Sex for the former or satellite radio for the latter."

   Rural horror.
"There is horror… and then there is rural horror. Back Roads wants to explore the dread of the wrong turn, the fear of decay and the terror of civilization’s breakdown. From startling images to transgressive tales, Back Roads wants contributors’ visions of the nightmare that waits just on the other side of our modern world, at the end of a two-rut road or at a broken-down gas station. We encourage you to take your cues from classic stories of rural horror, both literary and cinematic, and see where your dark impulses take you.

"Bear in mind that although horror is an essential part of this subgenre, Back Roads is not interested in splatter above such niceties as plot and character. Have something to say and use the rural horror’s specific approach to fright to say it."

Stories for sf and fantasy readers. Ocassional horror.
"We have no formula for fiction. We are looking for stories that will appeal to science fiction and fantasy readers. The SF element may be slight, but it should be present. We prefer character-oriented stories. We receive a lot of fantasy fiction, but never enough science fiction or humor."

Assistant editor John J. Adams prefers Courier font according to his helpful blog.

Currently reading for anthology of novellas.
As of June 2007, they are open for novella submissions to 65,000 words, but prefer under 50,000.

"Although our interests change with each anthology we put out, we generally stay within the same boundaries. We publish mostly fantasy and horror. I am also very tough on humor pieces and have yet to take one (maybe even dating back to the Black Moon Magazine days). I just think that some humor in the story sometimes works, but it is a rare occasion and especially in fantasy.

For our science fiction material, please send traditionally-inspired pieces with a twist in your story-telling. We don't want space opera or fanfiction. We want something uniquely told that's obviously science fiction."

   Create a thrilling emotional experience.
"While Son and Foe is explicitly open to speculative fiction, we do not exclude any particular genre or mode of writing. About our only guideline for the content of submissions is that works need to be in English, and they need to be good. This means that we accept literary fiction, noir, action/adventure, science fiction, mystery, comedy, realism, fantasy, horror, slipstream, etc. See our mission statement for more information on why that is.

"Something to keep in mind when submitting your opuses: these stories cost Son and Foe's staff time to read and money to buy, and they cost you time to write and money to print. Being able to create thrilling emotional experience in a short amount of space is something that will always manage to grab Son and Foe's attention."

Pay Rate: 5AU¢/word ($300AU max)

Submissions: Electronic
Dates: May 2007 to present (Jun 2007, #2)
Stores and more in a shared created world.
" We are looking for fiction of any length, and short “non-fiction” articles that explain an aspect of the society, history or world of New Ceres. We anticipate that the contents of the first several issues will be a combination of solicited and unsolicited works.

"Submissions will be open to writers in any genre. The only proviso here is that your work must exist within the context and reality of the world. We are equally happy to see swords at sunset, romance, space opera, humour, social comedy, horror …there are as many variants as there are writers.

"You can pick up characters already within or create new ones. You can have entire storylines within a corner of this world that is your own. You can write in any genre (almost - we do not pay for anything that cannot be viewed by a general audience) and use any word length to a maximum payment of Aus$300.

"Anything. Well, almost anything. No erotica or excessive violence. You can use themes that have already partly been explored, just as long as your story is well told and does not copy what is already there. Just make your story your own - we do not want stories that simply copy the life histories of characters already in our world. Given the recent history of New Ceres, there is a high likelihood that lots of people from Earth would end up there, out of necessity. And not only from Earth. New Ceres has *so* many possibilities. Explore them. "

   Twice a year, all genres.
Our dictionary defines literature thus: written works, esp. those valued for form and style. And that is what we are looking for—form and style. Any genre is acceptable. We don't back away from a fight. If your work screws with convention, breaks rules, makes demands of the reader, then we're equal to the challenge.

Weird Tales was revived in 1990 for its current run.

"We're looking for the best in fantasy-based horror, heroic fantasy, and exotic mood pieces--plus the occasional odd story that won't fit anywhere else. We want to please our readers with superior writing and to surprise them with new ideas. To this end, we will occasionally publish a story in which the ominous, eldritch, and/or squamous horrors waiting to pounce turn out to be quite innocuous."

Quarterly webzine / annual anthology with Southern attitude.
Southern Fried Weirdness looks for original stories, poems, and nonfiction articles which somehow manage to encapsulate the title of the publication. Typically, I am looking for stories which combine speculative elements with the tone and feel of Southern literature. I will consider, and occassionly publish, speculative and weird stories from all around the world, but these stories will have a harder time finding acceptance than stories in the subgenre which is this publication's namesake.

   Contemporary pulp fiction.
"Spacesuits and Sixguns is a magazine of contemporary pulp fiction - simple, straightforward storytelling with an emphasis on action. We're not looking for Lovecraft or Howard pastiches, or stories set in the 1930's. Read a dozen pulp fiction stories, soak it all up, then ask yourself: what if this happened in my hometown today?

"Write close to home, write about what you love, and follow Elmore Leonard's maxim: leave out the parts people skip.

"All genres accepted -- detective, horror, mystery, adventure, SF, sword and sorcery. We love them all. Give us about 4000 words. Shorter is fine. We're flexible. If it’s longer and it's good, no problem.

"Rule number one - be fun!"

SF, fantasy and horror with an emphasis on fun.
"Length: up to 20,000 words for Australians/New Zealanders/ASIM subscribers; 10,000 for all others. Andromeda Spaceways is intended for a wide audience, so we don't want anything more than M rated: No gratuitous sex or graphic violence. We want the overall tone of ASIM to be light as opposed to the dark-and-gritty style that characterises so many other SF mags this day and age. This does not mean we only publish light humour pieces, though. Our readers are just as keen on traditional fantasy and hard science fiction. We're just not the best market for doom-laden go-nowhere stories which push the boundaries of the English language into new and unfortunate places. Given an otherwise even choice between angst and adventure, we'll grab the adventure."

Soon to be reading for "Horror Library, Volume III".
"Cutting Block Press is pleased to announce an open submissions period for the 3nd Volume of its Horror Anthology Series, +Horror Library+, to be published in trade paperback during 2008.

"We're looking for the highest quality examples of all forms of Dark Fiction, running the gamut from traditional horror, supernatural, speculative, psychological thriller, dark satire, including every point between and especially beyond. No Fantasy or Sci-fi unless the horror elements are dominant. Read +Horror Library+ Volumes 1 and 2 to see what's already pleased us. Special consideration will be given those pieces that we find profoundly disturbing, though blood and violence on their own won't cut it. While we will consider tales of vampires, ghosts and zombies, we tend to roll our eyes at ordinary ones. They're just too plentiful. Your best bet is to surprise us with something that is different, while well conceived and tightly executed."

   urban grotesque tales.
"City Slab ~ Urban Tales of the Grotesque wants to publish and promote stories that are taut, multi-leveled and well thought out. There is a uniqueness to life lived in an urban setting. Show me the grit and the contrast of the homeless masses with the well-to-do. Tell me a story about humanity's quest for sex or success or peace or bread. Keep at all times in mind that City Slab is a horror magazine and as such will lean toward tales with a definite supernatural element. Horror can be done without it, however, I see far too many of these. Stay away from the first person point of view. Omniscient or third person points better lend themselves to the rich narrative style that will grab and hold our attention.

"We see far too many stories that are not remotely urban. If your tale starts out in a cornfield or a strip mall I can tell it probably isn't going to be urban. This doesn't mean that only stories with heavy scenery of buildings and alleys are considered urban here. Paul Bates does a wonderful job in issue #1 of telling a story set in one room that has a fantastic urban feel to it."

Stories on the theme of the hidden world that surrounds us.
"The Edge of Propinquity is a series of short stories exploring the world around us that lurks just beneath the surface. It is the world of the unexplained, supernatural, magic, horror, duty, responsibility, black humor, conspiracy, unknown heritage and power."

The theme for the second year (2007) is 'Consequences.' The theme 'Consequences' should be considered to encompass and expand on the previous 'Revelations' theme.

"In order to be accepted for publication, stories must fit the webzine's themes - A modern day story focusing on a character deep within the hidden world that surrounds mundane society. The protagonist must deal with the consequences of her actions/reactions (and those of others) within that supernatural society. Alternately, stories can focus on a mundane protagonist suddenly and unexpectedly discovering the hidden world. It could kill her. It might not. That is your choice.

"The hidden world does not have to be supernatural. It could be conspiracy based. No far future, medieval or alternate dimension stories, please."

Fiction and poetry may be in any style or approach, as long as horror, Gothic, or dark fantasy elements are present. What I most seek is originality--svoid plots that are derivative. A fresh or original idea has its place in the Gothic chapbook series.

Midnight Echo aims to showcase the quality and diversity of the modern horror and dark fantasy genres. Particular emphasis will be placed upon Australian authors, but international voices will also be included.

All subjects within the genre of dark fiction will be considered, although stories that feature well-worn tropes (such as vampires, serial killers, evil children, etc) will need to present a new and innovative take on the concept. Midnight Echo is intended to be a magazine for adult readers and as such is open to content that includes sex, violence and even the odd naughty word or two! However, please remember that what we value most is the story.

   Macabre American south stories.
"The Encyclopedia Britannica describes Southern Gothic as a style of story set in the American South that is characterized by grotesque, macabre, or fantastic incidents or characters.

"Southern Gothic is fiction written by Southerners (native, imported, and honorary) that involves the grotesque, the mysterious, the desolate, and/or the fantastic, to some degree.

"What is Gothic?

"To be Gothic, there needs to be something ugly in the beauty, or something beautiful amidst ugliness. A juxtaposition of the startling with the mundane, the sacred with the profane. Gothic requires a certain eccentricity of phrase or imagery or subject or mood, or of the writer herself.

"Gothic also encompasses its more traditional definitions, involving haunting encounters, strange curses, deadly secrets, hidden doorways into alternate realities, and mysterious encounters with supposedly dead rock stars in empty train stations. Gothic rarely involves cthonic monsters emerging from the darkness to consume helpless protagonists and protagonistas.

"What we're looking for:

"Gothic tales set in the American South or about people from the American South. At Southern Gothic, we want to see the South in all its savage, haunted beauty.

"We want to see well-written stories as well as stories that are well-written. Brilliant language is meaningless without the context of plot and characterization, and the most exciting plot ever devised lies dead upon the page if written poorly.

"One of the best sets of Writer's Guidelines around is to be found at Weird Tales. I won't go through the trouble of rewriting them here, so please, take a gander and take it to heart. These suggestions apply to all writing, not just fantasy and horror.

"And hell, what are we talking about at Southern Gothic if not some pretty weird tales?"
